Kids with Santa -- Christmas 2008

Christmas Portrait 2008

I rarely ask them to pose for photos.

Does it show?

[EDIT]

As requested, here is last year's Santa photo:

SPC -- 'Slow' #2

Every night...

Every Night

Nearly every night, at least. I usually rock Harrison to sleep before putting him in bed. Much preferred over Hannah when she was a baby who demanded to be walked instead of rocked. Ouch.

SPC - 'Slow' #1

So, the new theme for Self Portrait Challenge in December is -- 'Slow'

December can be hectic. The parties, the cooking, the shopping, the traveling, the lists, the crowds, the lines, the weather....

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I get a chance, I like to slow down by sitting back, turning up the Christmas music and enjoying a nice, hot, steaming, cup of bokeh.

Mmmmm.....

Cup of Bokeh

More slowness here.

Photo Friday -- 'Black'

I believe it was actually a white bird, but in silhouette, everything is black, right?

UFO

Right.

Photo Friday -- 'Food'

I guess the theme is appropriate enough for the coming week.

My entry, however, is not so much.

Noodles at f/1.4

Other entries a Photo Friday.

SPC -- Upside Down #3

Fragile

For now, I'm too tired to explain the 'through the viewfinder' look of this.

So, if you're interested, check Andrea's explanation. Even if you're not interested, I recommend checking it out, she does a really good job of explaining it.

I'm doing something similar, only the twin lens reflex camera I'm using (borrowed from a friend) has a 5x5 grid on the ground glass viewfinder.

Halloween 2008

Just a couple days late on this.

Mainly just a few pictures to share.

This was the year for recycling Halloween costumes.

It was also the year for multiple choice costumes:

Over the course of several Halloween parties this year, we had a:
a.) dog
b.) cat
c.) Dumbo
d.) Indian Princess
e.) witch
f.) All of the above

*****

Halloween Puppy
This was his costume for last year. He tolerated keeping the hood on this year only slightly better than last year.

*****

Halloween Dumbo
We inherited this costume from my cousin whose boys are a few years older than Harrison. Thanks, Kris!

Dumbo is thirsty!

*****

Halloween Cat
We've had Hannah's cat accessories for several years now. Seems like she's been a cat at some point during the time of Halloween just about every single year!

*****

Halloween Indian Princess
Christy made this costume (the dress at least -- the vest, headdress and purse were purchased) several years ago. We were shocked to discover that it still fit her!

This is what Hannah wore to her friend's Birthday/Halloween party on Halloween night. I tagged along as a chaperone, but it was her first traditional 'Halloween' party. They did the ol' bowl of eyeballs, bowl of brains/guts, etc, they bobbed for apples, went on a haunted hayride, etc. She had a good time.

*****

We got the dress and hat from Goodwill for a buck fifty. This seemed to be the costume about which Hannah was least excited, but I was the most excited. I managed to get her to 'pose' for me for a couple of decent shots.
Halloween Witch
This is her 'mean/scary' face. :-)

Halloween Witch (bw)
...and I liked this one with her just peeking out from under the brim of her witch hat.

*****

I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!

SPC -- 'Upside Down' #1

It's a new month and a new theme at Self Portrait Challenge.

The theme: Upside Down

Seemed appropriate to have something a bit more challenging after October's 'gimme' theme.

Should be interesting.

SPC -- 'Mirrors' #4

It's the final week for the 'Mirrors' challenge for Self Portrait Challenge.

This is another case where an item that I've driven by hundreds or even thousands of times never really jumped out at me until I had a challenge theme that forced me to look for it and take notice.

As soon as I saw it, though, I knew this had to be used in my self-portrait this week. The bummer was that the couple of times I stopped to try, I always had terrible light, which, in this case is the reason for the conversion to black and white. The colors here were a bit drab anyway, regardless of the light.

ENO YAW

If there are any non-SPC folks out there who actually browse SPC photos from other contributors, you might want to make a note that the SPC blog site will be dormant for a few months as its creator takes a much-needed break from the site so that she can focus on other projects.

I have created a new group on Flickr, Self Portrait Challenge which will continue the goings on of the community under a slightly different format which is still being hammered out. Until further notice, if you're interested in seeing the many creative and varied interpretations of the monthly themes by all of the contributors, the Flickr group is the place to do it.

Happy trails.

Me's Zoo

This past weekend, we went to Me's Zoo in Parker City, Indiana.

From their website:
ME's zoo is one of the largest private zoos in the United States, nestled in a small community in Parker City, Indiana. With over 300 animals of all shapes and sizes, the ME's zoo is a fun a friendly place for the entire family. Get a 'real' close-up view of exotic animals including tigers, leopards, bears, monkeys, birds, and more! Children will love our baby animals in our petting zoo.

Hannah enjoyed feeding the animals. Harrison -- not so much. He would pull his hand away as soon as the animal got close enough to get the food.

As I mentioned before, Harrison is still working on his animal identifications and sounds. He kept calling the deer, "Gow -- Ott" -- meaning "cows with hats." Oh, the antlers, right! Cows with Hats; makes sense to me! :-)

Here are a few photos from our visit:
[NOTE: All pictures are clickable for larger versions -- Blogger ones will open automatically -- Flickr ones will take you to the Flickr page for that photo -- click "All Sizes," choose the "Original Size," then click "Download the Original Size" // I have still larger versions of all these. If anybody needs huge versions, just let me know!]
